What advantages does this provide to my company?

Already using or considering a Blue Care Network HMO plan? Combining a Blue Care Network plan with a health reimbursement arrangement enables you to set aside funds for employee deductibles and coinsurances. An array of options with world-class support provides your company the funding options it seeks. HRAs are tax deductible for you, and tax-exempt for the employee. Your company controls the funds in the HRA.


Why are HRAs popular with groups?

Because HRAs provide two powerful advantages – flexibility and savings. HRA regulations provide the flexibility to tailor an HRA to your budget while meeting employee needs. Employers using consumer-directed health care plans save as much as $1,500 per year, per member, over employers who do not.


In addition, an HRA encourages members to manage their health care dollars. People treat HRA dollars as "their money," and tend to spend them more wisely. Plus, BCN provides useful tools to assist them.


How does Healthy Blue HMO HRA work?

The HMO is paired with a Healthy Blue HRA. Your company establishes the dollar amount and limits for the HRA, what it will pay for and in what order. Choices are:


  • HRA pays first: HRA account funds are used first to pay medical deductibles and/or coinsurance; after HRA funds are exhausted, the employee pays the remaining medical deductible and/or coinsurance amounts.
  • Employee pays first: Employee pays the HRA deductible amount for the medical deductible and/or coinsurance before HRA funds are used.
  • HRA–employee split: Payment of deductible and/or coinsurance is split based on percentages established by the you, until HRA account funds are exhausted.
  • Employee pays first, then split: Employee pays the HRA deductible amount for the medical deductible and/or coinsurance, then payment of medical deductible and/or coinsurance is split based on percentages until HRA funds are exhausted.
