Employee Volunteer Programs
Employees of BCBSM have a proud history of giving back to the community. On an annual basis, our employees volunteer more than 50,000 hours in service to local non-profits. Our Blues Caring Crew volunteers participate in numerous community service projects throughout the year.
Recent volunteer activities include:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit
Mentoring children and promoting the virtues of a healthy lifestyle, BCBSM employees are actively involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Lunch Buddies program. Over the last two years, more than 200 volunteers have met with children in southeast Michigan schools during lunch to hang out, help with school work, and talk about being physically active and making good nutrition choices.
Also, this year, over 400 employees, family and friends raised more than $69,000 for the 2011 Bowling for Kids' Sake fundraiser.
Fight for Air Climb
This program of the American Lung Association increased awareness of lung disease, the prevention of lung disease, and promoted lung health. Three teams of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan employees participated in the Fight for Air Climb held at the Renaissance Center. The teams had to climb to the top of one of the Renaissance Center towers. BCBSM was the top fundraiser among 31 organizations raising $11,756. BCBSM's three teams placed first, second and third as the top fundraisers.
American Heart Association Heart Walk
Supporting the American Heart Association as it raised funds for research and increased awareness of heart disease in the community, 160 Blues employees participated in the annual Heart Walk. There were 59 team captains and more than $16,000 was raised.
