Free Clinic Grants
For more than 70 years, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has demonstrated a commitment to providing access to health care services for all Michigan residents, particularly among groups who experience gaps in health care. One way we do this is through our Strengthening the Safety Net: Improving Health Care Access through Michigan's Free Clinics grant program. Blue Cross has provided grants totaling more than $7 million since 2005 to help free clinics with daily operations and to enhance their services. We are the only health care insurer in Michigan that provides this level of financial support to free health clinics statewide.
Blue Cross offers the Strengthening the Safety Net grant program to help strengthen and stabilize the health care safety net and expand crucial services for Michigan's uninsured and underinsured residents. In 2011, we awarded more than $1 million in grants. The grants will benefit 53 clinics in 32 Michigan counties.
Clinics were allowed to apply for noncompetitive grants of at least $15,000, competitive grants of up to $50,000 or both. Five applications (representing six clinics) were awarded the competitive grant funding, and 53 applicants received noncompetitive grant funding.
The competitive grants were awarded to clinics that identified clear gaps in health care coverage and outlined plans to address the gaps in creative ways. The noncompetitive grants will help clinics sustain existing operations, extend operating hours or add services. The clinics selected to receive this funding handled approximately 140,000 patient visits in 2010.
