Quality and Evaluative Studies

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has one of the largest repositories of health care utilization data in the United States. We serve the community by researching health care services and trends. We compare the BCBSM population to the national health care population; along with the impact new health care trends might have on BCBSM and our members. Through rigorous data analysis, we evaluate cost, quality and utilization of BCBSM programs and products. All of this research is then applied to improve health care in the community.

We are committed to completing studies that demonstrate scientific integrity, methodological rigor and can be used in practical application. We identify variations in patterns of care compared to accepted national standards and guidelines, uncover evidence of best practice performance, and determine opportunities to improve health care value.

Quality of Care

The Key Quality of Care Measures report (637K PDF) presents highlights of the BCBSM quality study findings and a comparison to benchmarks and targets. The report was developed to supply internal and external customers with corporate and product level information. The report provides results based on data from calendar years 2001 and 2002 unless otherwise noted.

Antibiotic Use

The Antibiotic Use for Acute Respiratory Infections by Michigan Members (820K PDF) study reports on the use and usage variation of antibiotics among BCBSM members. Infections caused by bacteria that have become resistant to previously potent antibiotics are an important public health threat. This report shows efforts by providers and patients are needed to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use, especially for acute bronchitis.

The Dartmouth Atlas

Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care in Michigan

The Dartmouth Atlas is the most extensive study of medical care of its kind in Michigan. With this groundbreaking study, we made a commitment to turn raw data on health care practices into useful information aimed at improving the quality of health care throughout the state. Please Note: Although initially released in April 2000, BCBSM and BCN continue to make the Atlas accessible due to interest and the valuable information it contains.
