Ambulatory Surgery Centers

Freestanding ambulatory centers, commonly referred to as ambulatory surgery centers, provide outpatient services. These facilities may operate independently or have hospital affiliations.

In certain states, FASCs must meet program standards and obtain approval by the following companies before coverage of services under an auto or auto-patterned group health care program:

• Chrysler
• DELPHI Corporation
• Ford
• Visteon and Visteon Systems
• General Motors

Services won’t be covered if a member's plan requires they be performed in an auto-approved FASC and care is received in a non-auto-approved facility.

The local Blue Cross Blue Shield plan in each of these states is responsible for assuring the FASC meet and maintain program standards. Confirm with your local Blue Cross Blue Shield plan before services are received if you’re unsure whether a particular FASC is auto-approved.

BlueCard Plans

Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans in these states belong to the BlueCard program. Although FASCs in these states are not required to be auto approved, they still must participate with the local Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan. Check with your local plan to obtain the names and addresses of participating FASCs located in your area.

The local BCBS plans in the states listed below haven't verified whether the Freestanding Ambulatory Surgery Centers participate with their plan or meet auto program standards.

Once the verification process is complete, a list of auto-approved FASCs will be available. Until then, there will be no payment for services received in a FASC located in:

• District of Columbia
• Washington
• Alaska
