Blue Distinction Center designation hinges on new requirements
The Michigan Blues implemented two new requirements for hospitals seeking designation or renewal as a Blue Distinction Center®. The requirements relate to surgeons who perform the specific specialty services.

For a hospital to be deemed eligible for Blue Distinction Center designation, all identified surgeons performing the procedures must be:

  • Board certified for the specialty or sub-specialty
  • Contracted with the BCBSM TRUST (PPO) network

As more group customers consider tailoring benefits to steer members to Blue Distinction Centers, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan must ensure that all professional practitioners are qualified and participate with us at competitive rates.

The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® is a nationwide network of designated medical facilities within the service areas of participating Blue plans. Designated facilities meet stringent, objective, evidence-based selection criteria developed in collaboration with expert physicians and medical organizations.
