The perks of seasonal produce
Shopping seasonally means buying fruits and vegetables during the season they’re harvested in your area. In-season produce is typically the freshest and most flavorful, since it doesn’t need to be preserved and transported across long distances. The best way to find seasonal food is at your local farmer’s market. As a bonus, you’ll be supporting small businesses right in in your community! If you’re shopping at a grocery store, check the signs. A quick way to tell if something is in season is if there’s a lot of it and it’s on sale.
In Michigan, there are lots of foods (especially vegetables) that are at their prime in fall and early winter, such as cranberries, broccoli, carrots, pumpkins, mushrooms and sweet potatoes. Check out this chart from Taste the Local Difference for more.* If you’re in another state or traveling, search for the best produce near you at seaonsalfoodguide.org.*
