Weight-loss plateaus are normal. Don’t give up now.
As you lose weight, your body composition and functions change to adapt to their new normal. You need fewer calories for energy than you did a few weeks ago, which means it’s a little harder to lose that next pound, and your weight levels out. This is what’s known as a weight-loss plateau.
If you’re experiencing a plateau, don’t be discouraged. Here are some steps you can take to keep moving forward:
Reassess your exercise habits to make sure you’re still getting plenty of activity. Consider ways to get moving outside of the gym, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
Look at your regular meal plans. It might be a good time to adjust your main ingredients or portion sizes as you prep your menu for the week.
Take time to appreciate your nonscale victories. Even if it’s feeling difficult to change the number on the scale, you’re still taking steps toward a healthy lifestyle.
Remember: While a weight-loss plateau may be frustrating, it’s important not to start any extreme diet or exercise plans to overcome it. Make sure you keep giving your body plenty of fuel to avoid increased hunger and overeating in the long run.
Make sure you record your team’s weight-loss progress (loss or gain) today at bcbsm.com/yourhealth. For the most accurate results, we recommend your team members weigh themselves on the same day and around the same time each week. If you have an issue submitting your weight, contact Catherine Passmore at WinByLosing@bcbsm.com.
