James Grant, M.D., named senior vice president and chief medical officer at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
James Grant, M.D., has been named senior vice president and chief medical officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, succeeding Thomas Simmer, M.D., who announced he was retiring at the end of this year.
Dr. Simmer joined Blue Cross in 1999, and was responsible for the successful launch of the Physician Group Incentive Program and the significant growth of the company’s Collaborative Quality Initiatives.
“We are tremendously grateful for Tom’s medical leadership with physicians and other providers,” said Daniel J. Loepp, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan president and CEO. “Thanks to Tom’s contributions, Michigan has higher quality health care and our long-standing commitment to strong provider partnerships will continue into the future.”
Drs. Grant and Simmer will work together to transition responsibilities when Dr. Grant begins his new role in September. Dr. Grant will be working closely with our Health Care Value division to maintain our focus on enhancing quality and value in health care.
“Through Jim’s leadership, we will continue our long-standing commitment to strong provider partnerships offering the highest quality of care to our members and for Americans through our quality care initiatives,” Loepp said.
Dr. Grant most recently directed all aspects of the Department of Anesthesiology as chair and physician executive for perioperative services at the Cedars-Sinai Health System in Los Angeles. From 1991 to 2019, he was at Beaumont Health, serving as chair of the Beaumont-Royal Oak Department of Anesthesiology from 2006-2019. He also served as inaugural professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine until 2019.
Since 2015 and until recently, Dr. Grant served as a member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Board of Directors.
Dr. Grant was president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists from 2017 to 2018 and served both as chair of the board of directors and president of the Michigan State Medical Society. |
