Provider Orientation and Training

Blue Cross Complete of Michigan offers orientation and provider training courses to better serve our members.

New provider orientation

Blue Cross Complete providers that are new to our network will receive a face-to-face visit from a provider account executive. This visit is your opportunity to learn about Blue Cross Complete and how to make the most of our partnership.

Blue Cross Complete is excited to collaborate with the March of Dimes® to offer Dismantling Bias in Maternal and Infant Healthcare™ e-learning provider training at no cost to providers. Providers can earn 1.5 continuing medical education credits upon completion. Credits will count toward Michigan implicit bias training requirements.

Cultural diversity training

Blue Cross Complete offers providers culturally and linguistically appropriate services training. Cultural diversity training provides an overview of CLAS (culturally and linguistically appropriate services) standards, legal requirements and local needs.

Why cultural awareness and responsiveness are important:

The cultural background of the members of your patient community can impact how they respond to, accept and manage their health care needs. It can impact:

  • Adherence to care plans
  • Proactive health measures
  • Unconscious biases
  • Patient trust

As a service to our providers, we’ve curated a collection of no-cost CME-accredited classes and learning resources that support continuing education in this area. All courses have been vetted or recommended by leading best practice organizations for practitioners and health care professionals.

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office of Minority Health

  • Improving Cultural Competency for Behavioral Health Professionals
    • 4 to 5.5 contact hours for counselors, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers. Other professionals may earn a statement of participation.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Health literacy
The CDC offers three online health literacy courses for health professionals. It’s recommended that you take the introductory course, “Health Literacy for Public Health Professionals,” first. The other two courses can be taken in any order.

  • Health Literacy for Public Health Professionals
    • Designates 1.5 nursing contact hours for nurses, Certified Health Education Specialists, and other health care professionals.

  • Fundamentals of Communicating Health Risks
    • This course helps clinicians and public health practitioners improve or learn new communication skills for conveying risk to the public. 
    • Certificate provided upon completion.

  • Effective Communication for Healthcare Teams: Addressing Health Literacy, Limited English Proficiency and Cultural Differences (no-cost continuing education)
    • CME credits offered
    • Certificate provided after completion of Module 3.

LGBTQ+ cultural competency training

Blue Cross Complete understands how important trust and a positive relationship between a patient and their health care provider can be to reducing barriers to care. For members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and all sexual and gender minority people, or LGBTQ+ community, encountering discrimination and societal stigma increase the risk of poor physical and mental health outcomes.

With an aim to increase sensitivity, awareness, and knowledge and to help decrease potential disparities, ongoing cultural competency training and resources will be offered on this page. Please check often for updated information and trainings.

The following sexual orientation and gender identity courses are offered through The National LGBTQIA Health Education Center, a program of the Fenway Institute, for no-cost continuing medical education credits. The course topics include:

  • General SOGI health care education
  • Elder and aging SOGI health education
  • Transgender, nonbinary and gender-affirming health education
  • Youth SOGI health education
  • SOGI health care education for racial and ethnic minorities

Please note: To receive CME credit for the course listed above, you must be registered as a user at lgbtqiahealtheducation.org and complete the evaluation of the course while logged into your user account.

Behavioral health toolkit

The Behavioral Health Provider Toolkit (PDF) includes information about several behavioral conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression and substance abuse disorders.

Behavioral health e-learning courses

As a part of Blue Cross Complete’s Behavioral Health Education and Support program, we have behavioral health e-learning resources available to you.

ADHD 
The ADHD E-Learning course includes a review of symptoms and suggestions about how to incorporate evidence-based screening tools and appropriate follow-up treatment into your practice.

Anxiety Disorders
The Anxiety Disorders E-Learning course reviews anxiety disorder symptoms and how to incorporate an evidence-based screening tool and appropriate follow-up treatments into your practice.

Depression
The Depression E-Learning course gives providers an overview of depression, how to diagnosis, measure and treat it.

Opioid Use Disorder
The Opioid Use Disorder E-Learning course provides information on opioid use disorder, the opioid epidemic, guidelines for prescribing opioids and additional resources.

Tobacco cessation

You are about to leave Blue Cross Complete’s website to complete continuing medical education credits in the field of tobacco cessation.
